Why is summer so deadly for younger drivers?

On Behalf of | Jul 9, 2025 | Personal Injury |

Parents often dread their teens getting their drivers’ licenses. After all, it opens new vistas for them, and their parents lose some of the control they had over them.

But the reality is that the months from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day in September are fraught with danger for teenage drivers.

Welcome to the 100 deadliest days

The summer months earned the designation of “100 deadliest days” because of the number of teen drivers who get into fatal collisions at a higher rate than during the rest of the year. This can be attributed to several factors, which include:

  • Their lack of experience behind the wheel
  • Plenty of free time to ride around
  • Experimentation with underage drinking and drug usage

Those are not the only reasons why summer driving can be so dangerous for teenagers. There are always construction zones popping up in and around Worcester during the summer months, and all the summer travelers heading out to vacation spots create long traffic jams.

Protect your family from highway dangers

Simply making your young driver aware of the enhanced hazard may help keep them safer on the highway. But if an accident takes place and a family member gets hurt this summer, knowing your rights under the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a good idea. Depending upon the circumstances of the auto accident, you may be able to recover financial compensation for any injuries, losses and other damages.
