What does it mean if your TBI symptoms are getting worse?

On Behalf of | Jul 23, 2025 | Personal Injury |

A TBI is a traumatic brain injury. Even something as relatively mild as a concussion qualifies as a TBI. But in other cases, the injury is incredibly serious and could lead to lifelong complications.

One important thing to do after a head injury is to watch the progress of your symptoms. For instance, if you hit your head in a car accident and then have a headache and sensitivity to lights and sounds, those symptoms may slowly abate as you rest and recover. It could be that you just had a concussion and your body needs time to heal.

However, there’s also the chance that your symptoms could get worse. The headaches become more severe or more consistent. You may develop other symptoms, such as dizziness, balance problems, memory issues or trouble with motor skills. Why would this be happening?

Bleeding around the brain

There are a few different reasons why this could happen, depending on the nature of your specific TBI. But one thing to keep in mind is that it could be due to bleeding around the brain, leading to an injury known as a subdural hematoma.

The problem here is that the bleeding may not stop on its own. As it gets worse, the symptoms progress, and there is more pressure being applied to the brain inside of the skull. If you do not seek medical attention, assuming that you will heal in time, this injury could even become fatal.

That’s why it’s so important to talk to medical professionals, even when you think you have a relatively minor injury. It could be very serious, and you may deserve financial compensation for your medical bills, lost wages and other costs.
