Traffic collisions result from driver choking on food in Massachusetts

On Behalf of | Nov 20, 2020 | Personal Injury |

Traffic collisions are damaging for the people who are involved, but they can also cause significant issues on the roads for others. When a crash happens, an entire highway may have to shut down. Emergency crews may struggle to get to the victims because of traffic or have to block off an area just to stay safe.

That’s what happened in this case on Interstate 495. According to a report from Nov. 6, a head-on crash just south of Marlborough resulted in a traffic jam that built up to around two miles long. The crash, which happened in the southbound lanes, was reportedly caused by a driver who lost control of their vehicle while choking on a piece of food.

The driver ended up crossing the median and hitting multiple vehicles before coming to a stop. The report stated that the man, 34, was driving a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee when he began to choke and then lost control of his vehicle. He hit a 66-year-old man’s 2019 Ford Edge in the southbound lanes. That man was reportedly injured in the crash.

Two other vehicles were also involved, but fortunately, neither of the drivers reported being injured.

Eating behind the wheel is a distraction

This is a good example of why it’s smart to pull over or park when you’re eating. Eating behind the wheel has the potential to be dangerous, especially if the driver begins to choke or if hot or cold liquids are spilled.

If you’re involved in a crash because a driver was distracted or dealing with an emergency, that person may be responsible for the damage that they cause as a result of their behaviors.
